Parents,
Welcome back to K/1! Although the perspective has changed, it is my hope that the experience will be just as fascinating and memorable as you see it through the eyes of your child. With some of us being new to Heron Heights and/or multiage, I am sure you are full of both anticipation and questions. Becoming knowledgeable about our classroom environment and procedures as well as getting to know more about me, will hopefully ease your "I can't believe my baby is starting kindergarten/first grade" anxiety.
There is a lot of information on the site, but I’d begin with the faq page. There I hope you find the answers to questions you may have [and maybe even a few you didn’t yet know you had]. I will work to grow the page throughout the year.
As always, thank you for your support. Remember, your multiage experience will be what you make of it, so don't be afraid to reach out and get to know the other families in the program. Take note of our multiage event dates [you can find them on the 'multiage events' page]. I can't say enough positive things about our events. Trust me, your child will not want to miss even one!!
Although I want to see every child at school every day, kids get sick. Especially kids this age. If your child iwill be absent from school, you must call the 24 hour absentee hotline at 754-322-9152 When your child returns, sometimes make-up work will come home, sometimes it wont. It really depends on what we did that day. If your child has a prolonged ilness [think...rhymes with stew] we can arrange a time for you to pick up missed work to avoid falling behind.
If your child will be absent for longer than three days due to a trip, you must obtain written [email] permission from Mrs. Weiss-Schnur before you leave. This is a Broward Schools formality that holds your child's placement in our classroom.
Whether your child has an appointment or is simply running on "sloth speed", kids are late to school sometimes. If you arrive after carline, you will need to park and walk into the front office to sign him/her in. A secretary will then call me to send two students to the office to meet your child and walk him/her to our classroom.
Please do not drop off your child during specials, lunch, or playground. If you know in advance that your child will be late, be sure to give me a heads up. I can sometimes avoid a child missing something "fun" if I am given notice.
Early pick-up is pretty simple but can be slow. With a photo ID, you can ask for your child in the front office. They will call our classroom. Your child will put their things away, pack up, and walk with two buddies to meet you in the front office. Please give yourself plenty of time. The gates may be locked, your child may not feel like cleaning up right away, etc. In addition, keep our schedule in mind. Avoid pick up during or right before special, lunch or playground time.
We call this a "change of dismissal" and they pop up here and there. Perhaps your child has a play date, or a conference and you don't want your child to ride the bus. No matter the change, you will need to fill out and submit a change of dismissal form to the front office. These changes cannot be made through phones calls or email. You can drop off the form personally or have your child turn it into me and I'll see that it gets submitted.
It's K/1 and we LOVE birthdays. In fact, we love them so much they could easily distract us for the entire day. In order to keep the excitement "manageable", I have a few guidelines.
Don't panic! It is pretty simple. The animals go home with different kids every night. I don't know how they do it, but the kids always remember who has had which animal, and they pass them around each morning. The child gets to spend the day with the stuffed animal, bringing it to specials and the rug for mini-lessons. They also get to take it home [I suggest throwing it in the dryer on high for a few minutes when it arrives]. It it looks dirty, a gentle cycle is okay Throughout the evening, snap a few photos of your child with the stuffed animal and send them to me so I can share them with the class.
On Wednesdays, PTO sells ice cream for. 65 during lunch. Every child is permitted to purchase. If you would like for your child to purchase ice cream please make sure they have money on their cafeteria account. Please let your child know if he/she is allowed to purchase ice cream. There is nothing more hearbreaking than a child who waited in line for ice cream only to be told their account is empty and they must walk away empty handed.
You will need your child's student number for this. Then, click on the ice cream cone icon in the upper right. From here, you can sign in and access your child's cafeteria account. I strongly suggest adding a balance to your child's account, even if you are not intending for it to be used. The money stays in your child's account through 12th grade.
Field trip payments have come a long way! Most of our trips are paid for online now, which can be convenient. Again, you will need your child's student number for this. The magic wand in the upper right will take you to HHE's online payment portal.
HHE is not a uniform school but we do have a dress code. Children should dress for fun. We go outside, we sit on the floor, we sing and dance, and we often get dirty. Make sure your child is dressed in a way that allows him/her to do those things. No spaghetti straps and shorts should be work under dresses or skirts. All students need to wear closed shoes. If your child's shoes have laces, please tie them in double knots in the morning before school.
Yes. Your child will receive math homework, Tuesday-Thursday. This homework is almost always a review of something we learned in school that day. Your child should be able to do it with minimal help.
Although you cannot see it the same way you see a math worksheet, the most important homework in K/1 is actually nightly reading. Both listening to your child read, as well as reading to your child, re critical. Before, during and after reading, discuss the text. Talk about your favorite parts, a problem the character encountered, how it made you feel, the reason for your favorite illustration, or something new you learned. Bedtime can be a good time, but anytime spent reading with your K/1 child is time well spent.
Yes. Your child will need a snack packed seperately from their lunch. Please go over which bag is snack and which is lunch. Your child needs to be able to open all snack containers independently. Please send a snack that is "tidy" and can be eating while working.
Although not required, your child will likely want a water bottle. They keep these out and can access them throughout the day. Please only send water in the bottle and make sure it is labeled with their name.
